Poetics of Passing
Poetics of Passing is a site-specific installation, publication, and lecture performance at the Alte Tankstelle Deutz, Cologne, reflecting on the poetry of transit, of passing, on the silence that follows moments of commonality, of exuberant hedonism. Understanding the gas station as a place of transit, of momentary lingering, pausing, and resting, the presented works and texts contemplate on a language of farewell, acknowledging the end as central to each narrative.

How do we say goodbye? How do we let go of wishes, dreams, and people? How can the end be celebrated as part of life, inherent to every new beginning – and what remains? Poetics of Passing is a site-specific installation, publication, and lecture performance at the Alte Tankstelle Deutz reflecting on the poetry of transit, of passing, on the silence that follows moments of commonality, of exuberant hedonism. Understanding the gas station as a place of transit, of momentary lingering, pausing, and resting, the presented works and texts contemplate on a language of farewell, acknowledging the end as central to each narrative.
The passing cars and travellers provide the backdrop for a temporary staging in the outdoor space surrounding the former pit stop, accompanied by text works of invited artists and writers as well as a newly produced installation of Nora Hansen (I want to paint your name in the sky (myths of creation), 2023) in the exhibition space. The remnants of a festive table in the parking lot, the pedestrian bridge over the expressway, a garage courtyard, the wood-panelled bar counter of the interior once turned into a venue for private parties provide a stage for poetry and performances on the opening day and invite the visitors to pause and read.
I want to paint your name in the sky (myths of creation) forms the last act of the work yoko x nora (2015 – 2023) by Nora Hansen. yoko x nora is a series of works that probes the merging and expansion of different levels of reality in performance, graphics, textile works, and installations. In an experimental long-duration performance, artist Nora Hansen experiences fictional adventures as and with the comic book heroine Yoko Tsuno brought to life as avatar and partner in a shared everyday life. The comic adventures of Yoko Tsuno, penned by author Roger Leloup, revolve around Yoko and her friendships and allies. As an electrical engineer and single mother with a family-like circle of friends, Yoko is a non-sexualised and multi-dimensional character who provides an alternative to the repetition of gender stereotypes in the world of comics and beyond.
The installation I want to paint your name in the sky (myths of creation) including sculptures, text, clothing, and embroideries deals with separation and farewell, and reflects on the various narrative and psychological processes inherent in the end of a story, a relationship, a life, a fiction. Inanimate garments and text fragments embroidered onto silicone sheets float in space as ghostly shells, bodies, or ecdysis (accumulation of reptiles). Framed hand embroideries display scattered motifs and text parts of a shared story, now split in half – free to develop further in two independent narrative threads.
